obtaining free-standing thin film samples

hello listers,
i am a student at SIU carbondale. i am try to fabricate a
free standing thin film by first coating a NaCl crystal and then
dissolving a portion of it in water to obtain the freestanding
sample. however, since the film also needs to be suspended on a
silicon frame, i am getting a discontinuous film due to the
boundary between the NaCl crystal and the silicon frame glued to
it. could you suggest a more feasible/suitable option to obtain
a freestanding flim? i am not very comfortable with masking and
etching, although i am aware that such procedures have been
utilised in achieving the results i desire.
any and all suggestions would be very welcome.
thankyou very much and have a nice day,
regards,
sailesh.
