I am trying to determine the interest in volumetric, or 3-D, MEMS-scale
batteries. We have built working 2mm diameter cells, 0.5mm thick that
generate 1.2-1.4V and that have a theoretical capacity (we are in the
process of measuring actual values) of ~11mAh. Our process is capable of
building cells 1mm (or smaller) on a side, with cubic or cylindrical
geometry, and on a variety of substrates (metallized silicon, polyimide,
etc.). Other chemistries with different voltages and capacities, and
recharge capability are under development.
